FAQ`s

The Nová Myslivna project, which is emerging in an iconic location in Brno, has aroused emotions from the very beginning and raised many questions. We therefore decided to interview Barbora Fialová, manager of Hotel Myslivna, in order to answer the most frequently asked.

Why was it necessary to tear down Hotel Myslivna?

We’ve been running the Myslivna hotel and restaurant since 2011 and it’s become a very dear place to us. We spent tens of thousands of hours there, with guests, our friends, but also with dozens of individuals who have helped keep the place alive. The covid crisis, the war in Ukraine, and the energy crisis have led to a sharp decline in tourism and a rapid increase in costs. The operation of the building, which in all respects is dilapidated, became financially unsustainable. If we add to this the building’s poor structural stability, it was no longer possible to preserve Hotel Myslivna.

Did you plan on demolishing the hotel from the beginning?

No. For us, too, Myslivna was a beloved place. This was one of the reasons that we purchased it from the municipality of Brno in 2011. By the way, Brno had tried to sell it back in 2008, but nobody was interested then. When we took over the hotel, we kept it open for a whole decade longer. It remained a popular destination for people from Brno and visitors from farther afield, who could book rooms and enjoy meals in the dining room. It’s very likely that if we hadn’t bought the hotel and restaurant, it would have closed much sooner.

Couldn’t you have at least preserved the restaurant?

The building was constructed in such a way that the hotel and restaurant were connected, and so preserving just the restaurant was impossible. Plus, after 85 years, the building itself was in a derelict state.

Was Myslivna a listed building?

Despite the often repeated news to this effect, the fact is that Hotel Myslivna was never labeled a heritage site. We understand Brno’s special relationship to Myslivna since we feel the same way, but it’s not an exceptional building from a construction point of view. The complex had two interconnected parts: a restaurant designed by the architect Bohuslav Tureček in 1938–1939 and a hotel built in the 1970s and 1980s. Compared to other contemporary buildings, neither structure had any special architectural features. Only some elements in the hotel’s interior and the furniture was of any interest. We managed to preserve some percentage of both and so visitors to Nová Myslivna will soon be able to see them again.

Why aren’t you building a hotel again?

We thought long and hard about it, but after we thoroughly researched every angle we came to the realization that Brno has a sufficiently full accommodation capacity in this current climate and new hotels are being built close to business parks. We also firmly believe that Nová Myslivna will give Brno residents back more than a hotel where guests stay for just a few nights.

Will Nová Myslivna be accessible to people who don’t live there?

We understand the symbolic importance of the place and our goal when we designed the project was for it to continue to have a mark on the map of Brno. In Nová Myslivna, there will be a restaurant with views of Špilberk Castle and the cathedral on Petrov Hill. The restaurant will be open to the public, accessible via the elevator in the main foyer. The project won’t be a gated resort that people who walk by can only glimpse through a fence.

Nová Myslivna seems bigger than the former building. Won’t this have a negative impact on the surrounding nature?

A team of renowned architects worked on the Nová Myslivna project and their single-minded goal was to create a pleasant place to live with a character that will blend in with the surrounding area and with a footprint similar to the original complex. Unlike the “old” Myslivna, this project’s proportions will better respect the nature of the terrain’s proportions and therefore blend into its surroundings.

How will Nová Myslivna change the Brno panorama?

Though the building will sit atop a hill, it’s not a tall structure at a height of max. 20.5 meters. Nová Myslivna fits into Brno’s panorama as seen from Špilberk and thus won’t change the views of the landscape.

Who will live in Nová Myslivna?

We have a clear vision—we want Nová Myslivna to be a place full of life, where people will want to meet, where new friendships will start. We’re doing everything in our power to sell it to people who will really live there and not to property speculators. Brno residents don’t have to worry that Nová Myslivna will become a hostel for tourists listed on online accommodation platforms.
